There's a monument at Anzac that claims Casey wrote a report stating that a Turkish soldier picked up and carried a wounded Australian soldier back to the Anzac lines. The monument itself depicts this action. The problem is, I've searched through Casey's correspondence when he was in politics and never come across any reference to the incident. What I'll be doing now is going through this lot and seeing whether it's referred to at all. Another great find!
Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement. I get great joy in researching the files of NAA. There is still so much information in their files re WW1 that is opened but not digital released as yet. A lot of Light horse info is still to be made digital.
I did find an interesting bit that may be related here to a the LH.
Richard Gardiner CASEY
IN the service file of;
WHITEHEAD John Alexander Patrick 566 Pte B Sqn 13 LHR
Into the inqury of his death in a bycycle accident on the 2nd June 1918 near Longpre France.
He suffered a fractured skull when he collided with a car belonging to Maj Casey Aust Corps HQ.
He died the following day and was buried at Crouy British Cemetery Crouy-Sur-Somme France
What is interesting the statement given by Maj Casey is shown as PN Casey (only I could find no PN Casey Maj Aust Corps HQ only RG Casey Maj Aust Corps HQ. Could PN be a mistake in transcription I'am unsure?
But it is a an interesting side line here. The statement from Casey is page 53.
